Bellefontaine Kiwanis Club’s Annual Pancake Breakfast yielded 30 oz. of waste for the local landfill. Under the guidance of the Solid Waste District Staff the Kiwanis Club members turned their annual fundraising breakfast into a Zero Waste Event. On Saturday morning, March 14, 2008 club members served 447 breakfasts yielding 157 lbs. 2 oz. of material that in the past headed for the waste stream.
Through careful segregation of waste materials 85 lbs. 4 oz. went to a commercial composting operation, 25 lbs. 10 oz. of cardboard, box board, and plastic containers went to recycling, 44 lbs. 6 oz. of food material went to a local food pantry, leaving just 1 lb. 4 oz. of waste (mostly plastic bottle caps and cellophane) going to the landfill. This represents a diversion rate of 98.8%
Congratulations Kiwanis Club!
